I’m very excited about the new release of our book, Making Disciples, Making Leaders, (www.wjkbooks.com). I started this project in 1991 as my dissertation project for a D.Min at Columbia Seminary. I had originally wanted to do something in the area of preventing clergy burnout. Doug Hix, chair of my project, encouraged me to do something pro-active rather than reactive. What if clergy could strengthen their elders and deacons to serve as a team with them in ministry rather than mere managers of the church? A book was born!
For over 20 years I have been teaching and improving this model in the Presbyterian Church (USA). I joined forces with Dr. Von Clemons, Associate Pastor of Adult Education at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC, in 2002. Von brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the framework I had established. It has been a team effort.
We learned as we taught. Elder and deacon feedback made this a better tool for training. It expanded to a comprehensive leadership development model. It is more than officer training. It is Making Disciples, Making Leaders.
This is the Second Edition and includes a new Participant’s Workbook. It conforms to the new Book of Order and provides an open range of options for small, medium and large churches. You can build your own training program with our material!
What if clergy could strengthen their elders and deacons to serve as a team with them in ministry rather than mere managers of the church? Who knows, we might just prevent a lot of clergy burnout!
I would welcome the opportunity to work with you in using this tool in your ministry. You can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
